There are a lot of modern wedding cakes with a flat, fancy looking frosting. It is smooth.. what is this called, and is there a recipe available?
What is the flat frosting on fancy wedding cakes called?
It's called Rolled Fondant, and it's made with glucose, powdered sugar, and corn syrup. You can find recipes online or buy it pre-made at craft and specialty stores, such as A.C. Moore or Michaels.
Fondant doesn't have the best flavor, but it is wonderful for decorating because it can be cut, shaped and molded, plus when it's rolled out and laid over a cake, it makes the cake nice and flat and smooth, with a texture that ordinary buttercream icing cannot provide.
Reply:its called Fondant
generally people don't care too much for the flavor...its quite bland....
being a cake decorator, if i have to use Fondant for a cake to get a smooth sheen look, I use Marshmallow Fondant...which IMHO tastes much better and is easier to make...
marshmallows
water
and powdered sugar....
Reply:Fondant. I was intimated by it at first but have been experimenting with it for a few years now. It can be colored, flavored, shaped, smoothed, etc. I usually buy mine (made by Wilton) at Wal-Mart because it's $1-2 cheaper there than at Michael's. It's also very pretty when used with luster %26amp; petal dusts for flowers %26amp; details. I just ordered some Satin Ice brand but haven't used it yet.
Reply:I think what you are talking about is rolled fondant. I have no idea where to get a recipe, I normally see it sold in stores, like Joann's or Michael's, in the cake decorating section.
Reply:Fondant:
16 ounces mini-marshmallows
2 to 5 tbsp water
2 lbs C%26amp;H cane powdered sugar
1/2 cup Crisco
Good Luck!! Hope this helps.
Reply:If you're talking about the frosting that can be draped over a cake, I think it's called fondant.
