What is considered formal wear for a wedding?

I have a wedding I am going to in August and the wedding is at 6pm. My husband and I have never been ones to dress up. We are more of the rocker/punk/goth style: jeans, t-shirt or baby tee, ol' school chucks and maybe a hat with dark make-up for me. Oh yeah, and not to forget the tattoos and piercings....

What is considered formal for going to a wedding and then to a reception at a really nice resturant? I am in dire need for help b/c I am not the type to spend a lot of money on dress clothes when I know I will probably never wear them again?

Also, is is ok for a female to wear pants if it is formal or does it need to be a dress?

Please help!

Thanks in advance!

What is considered formal wear for a wedding?
Formal for a women is a formal dress. Try second hand stores as sometimes they have some very nice women's clothing for affordable prices.

As you can see from my photo, formal for a man is a formal suit and tie.
Reply:Formal means dresses or skirts. Usually its best to go with plain colors. A fall wedding color sch me is earthy... so you could wear browns, golds, burnt orange, green or purple. Kitten or high heels. Simple accessories(shoes, pocket book, belt, jewelry) golds or browns. Light makeup and colored/clear lip gloss.
Reply:Anything but jeans and a tshirt/sneakers is fine. You don't have to go spend a lot of money on some ugly frilly dress when you can put on a nice top and maybe black dress pants....which answers your question yes you can wear pants but make sure theyre a little dressy.....

here are tips for what to/what not to wear to a wedding:

I know you guys arent the dressy type, but hey it's one day.
Reply:Formal wear for a man is a tux or a dark business suit with a tie and white shirt. For a woman, it is a cocktail dress or a gown. You can probably rent formal wear for both of you. If you can't dress appropriately, don't go.
Reply:for you, i nice pair of black dress pants would keep you from having to actually wear a dress. find a dressy black top to match, and youll have a dressy outfit that you'll still feel fairly comfortable in.
Reply:the easiest way to dress up formally would be a simple and elegant dress. little black dress would be the safest. if you do not want to wear a dress you could wear pants made up of nice cloth like satin. walk around the mall, check out shops selling formal wear and i'm sure you could find soemthign there.

no goth make-up, no piercings. keep it simple.
Reply:Church atire would be good, or a very dressy shirt, a formal skirt, a pair of high heel shoes, and if you really want to go out of your way put your hair up in a fancy way.
Reply:here's a link to some ideas on ebay
Reply:Your best bet it to get a pair of dress pants and a button down from express. And since there is an express men too, you guys can both find something to suit you. Im not much for dressed either but I found some great dress pants, also the button downs at New york and Co, fit really great and aren't that expensive.

I face the same problems as you, im not the rocker/punk style but I do have tons of uncalled for piercings, guages ears, and tattooes, so I know what its like. Goodluck!
Reply:Usually a dress.I am the same way I always wear jeans and a T shirt.
